Tiny Homes from Ness City

In 2015, Industrial Technology Teacher Brent Kerr noticed his students weren’t engaged in his assignments. Rather than tell his students to “get over it”. Brent asked them if there was anything they’d like to build instead. Students said they were interested in building Tiny Houses after seeing a show on HGTV. Little did that class know that this day would start one of the most bold and innovative programs in Kansas.

Building a successful program from the foundation

In 2015, Educator Brent Kerr had a vision to transform his Industrial Tech high school class into a student-run small business that built one tiny home and sold it at the end of every school year. Brent and I partnered to bring long-term STEAM opportunities to his students which included nesscessity clothing, a clothing business run by his students. I helped Brent get connected to educators across Kansas and around the world to help him find a buyer for his students first tiny home. Since that time, Brent’s students have made and sold 6 tiny homes with all profits going back into Ness City’s industrial tech program.
